The Science

The Science of Structural Fidelity

Digital mind uploading is, at its core, an informational challenge — not a biological one. The objective is not to preserve a living brain. It is to preserve the brain's connectome: its precise synaptic wiring diagram, encoded in the arrangement of 100 trillion connections between 86 billion neurons.

Aldehyde-Stabilized Cryopreservation (ASC) accomplishes this with a fidelity no other preservation method has matched.

Near-Perfect Synaptic Preservation

ASC fixes neural membranes and synaptic junctions at the molecular level using glutaraldehyde perfusion. Under electron microscopy, the preserved architecture is indistinguishable from living tissue. Verified by the Brain Preservation Foundation in 2016 (rabbit) and 2018 (pig).

Stable for Centuries

After chemical fixation, the brain is vitrified and stored below −135°C — the glass transition temperature of water. At this temperature, biological decay is effectively halted. We hold the biological asset until scanning technology matures.

A major portion of every membership fee is deposited into a legally independent Swiss Patient Care Trust, managed by an independent board. At a conservative 4% real return, the endowment covers centuries of storage — regardless of what happens to the operating foundation.

Is this cryonics?

Not in the conventional sense. Traditional cryonics focuses on preserving biological viability — the hope of future medical revival. We focus on something different: preserving structural information. ASC permanently forecloses biological revival. The fixative cross-links tissue at the molecular level, making biological resuscitation impossible. What it does preserve — with a fidelity no other method can match — is the precise synaptic architecture of the brain: the connectome. We are, in the most accurate sense, an information preservation institution.

Are you guaranteeing mind uploading?

No. We are not guaranteeing anything about future emulation. What we are guaranteeing is preservation quality. We commit to maintaining the biological asset with the highest available fidelity, within a legally sound institutional structure, for as long as required. Whether, when, and how a preserved connectome could be reconstructed or emulated is a question for future science. We do not make claims about timelines we cannot verify.

What happens if your organization ceases to operate?

This is the question we take most seriously. The Patient Care Trust is legally independent of the Heritage Connectome Initiative. It is managed by an independent board of trustees — scientists, legal scholars, and client representatives — with a mandate to protect the biological assets regardless of what happens to the operating foundation. The trust's endowment is structured to generate sufficient yield to cover storage costs for centuries without additional funding. If the operating foundation fails, the trust continues.

What is the difference between ASC and standard cryonics vitrification?

Vitrification attempts to replace blood with cryoprotectants to prevent ice crystal formation, preserving the brain in a state that is — in theory — biologically reversible. ASC works differently. Glutaraldehyde is perfused through the brain immediately post-mortem, chemically cross-linking the proteins and permanently fixing the cellular structure. This eliminates biological viability entirely, but it preserves the synaptic connections at a fidelity level that electron microscopy has verified to be near-perfect. For the purpose of future digital emulation, what matters is not whether the brain can be biologically revived — it is whether the structural information can be read. ASC is optimized for information, not biology.
